Well, my design project is drawing to a close. I completed the final training last week, and now I need to convert the live training into an on-line module. Whereas the first four modules were me teaching pedagogical theory and then having the trainees apply it, the fifth and final module was different. In this module, I was training the trainers on particular reporting procedures that I require from them. I did review at the start of the training about the reasons for assessment, the major types of assessment, and how assessment can be used to drive program improvement, but the training for the most part was on the various training reports I need, the forms where to input training metrics, and the intervals that I need reports from them. Overall, it was a pretty dry and straightforward training. The only technology that I used during it was GoToMeeting so that I could show my screen and the necessary forms they need to complete as well as record my voice and my screen. Pretty simple...
Well, here we are at design journal 4! These past few weeks I've attempted to learn Articulate 360. As I mentioned in my previous post, the learning was slow-going which was surprising because I usually pick up new technology fairly easily. But after spending days on the software, watching countless Storyline 360 explainer videos, and reading tons of S360 knowledge base articles and only completing two design elements, I decided that the software was not worth the effort. At the end of the day I have to be able to account for the hours my boss pays me for, and I would have a hard time accounting for learning Storyline. 1) It took a long time to learn. 2) It did not look that great when it was finished. 3) Other programs produce a more professional-looking product in less time. So, after all of that, I decided to drop Storyline 360 from my project plans and just stick with Articulate Rise. I finished module four using the same module design I had developed earlier. I have only one m...
Well…interesting news! My boss announced this week that he is quitting! What does that mean for my training projects? Well, for the training that I am designing for other teams in the company, it means nothing. Nothing will change and I will keep working with those teams to produce the training that they need. For the training that I am personally leading, though, here will be a change. Train the Trainer Training, my baby, will continue because I own it. But the Manager training I was designing for my boss will be put on hiatus. He was leading that project…and not in a very timely manner, I have to say. But he was leading it and I was designing it to his specifications. Now I will postpone the design of the training until the new VP of Talent begins and I work with him to find out what he wants. So now my project is changing focus from Manager training to Train the Trainer Training. Fortunately that project has been running and still has two weeks to go until it is over, so the timeli...
Good news! I’ve finally been able to access both pieces of software I am using to design my project, the learning management system and Articulate. I will talk about my experience with both. The LMS has finally been started after executing the contract at the beginning of September. We are using Litmos. I have been learning its capabilities and using it, like doing bulk upload of learners and putting them into teams. The LMS also came preloaded with 250 learning modules of decent quality. Unfortunately, they are completely uncategorized, so I will have to go through each one to put it into a category and also activate them. This is a huge flaw with the software, and I have advised my peers in sister portfolio companies not to use Litmos for this reason. I don’t have time to tag 250 videos and neither does anyone else. I also have put together my first learning module using the software. The results were not spectacular. It really looked like amateur hour! Moodle, the free LMS, deliv...
At my job, I am currently supervising thirteen training projects across all different departments: sales, engineering, professional services, customer support, marketing, and human resources. My design project is to build a manager training program for our new managers. I haven't been able to start to build it out past designing the first four modules because the LMS provider my company contracts with can't roll out the software until the beginning of October. I'm stuck in a holding pattern as I wait for that software to on-board. So I guess the biggest challenge at this point in the design process is working in a corporate environment versus working in my own classroom where I would have more control over the process: in a corporate environment, the design process is dependent on other people's schedules and budgets, which often don't align with mine! But in the past two weeks I've had to use and learn a few other pieces of software which I'll detail here...
